Safety guide

How to use your pepper spray responsibly

Pepper spray is a non-lethal self-defence tool meant to create distance so you can get to safety. Used correctly, it can deter an attacker in seconds — but only when you know when, where, and how to use it.

What to do

Where should I keep my pepper spray?

Keep it in a front pocket, belt pouch, or easy-reach bag compartment — not buried deep where you cannot grab it in seconds.

How do I maintain my spray before an emergency?

Check the expiry date regularly, replace expired cans, and practise unlocking the safety cap at home without pressing the nozzle.

Where should I aim when using it?

Aim at the attacker's eyes, nose, and mouth from roughly 6–10 feet (2–3 metres). Use short 1–2 second bursts, not a continuous spray.

What should I do right after spraying?

Create distance immediately and move to safety. Your goal is escape, not confrontation.

When and how should I test my spray?

Test outdoors, downwind, with a brief spray in an open area. This confirms the nozzle works and builds muscle memory.

How should I store pepper spray at home?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and out of children's reach.

What if I or someone else is exposed to the spray?

Contact authorities after an incident. Flush affected skin or eyes with cool water and seek medical help if needed.
